Helping Our Temple Community

Helping Those who Help Us

As the novel coronavirus changes almost every aspect of how we live our lives on a daily basis, one constant is Temple’s unwavering commitment to helping those residing in the Philadelphia area. These are Temple students, our neighbors on North Broad Street, local children who can no longer attend classes and our incredible team of healthcare workers who continue to bravely serve our community in the face of the unknowable, just to name a few. Many have reached out and asked how they can get involved, even as much of the world is confined to their homes. Below you’ll find six concrete initiatives you can contribute to as we work to mitigate the emerging crisis caused by COVID-19.

How you can help:

The Temple Health team is on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis, caring for patients at Temple University Hospital's campuses and providing relief efforts for our neighbors. Temple University Hospital caregivers are, and always have been, beacons of strength and courage that provide hope to the city of Philadelphia and beyond.

As the COVID-19 pandemic grows, area hospitals, including Temple University Hospital, are looking to secure greater supplies of Personal Protective Equipment — items like masks, gloves, and face shields — to meet rapidly increasing demand. Supplies like these are the first line of defense in keeping those caring for the sick safe and healthy.

Temple Health is the primary source of medical care for many of North Philadelphia residents. Your donation will immediately help support the hospital’s emergency response efforts, including providing personal protective equipment to responders on the frontlines of the epidemic.
Some populations are much more vulnerable to the coronavirus threat than others. Temple Health’s Community Emergency Fund supports the Center for Urban Bioethics as they address the immediate and evolving needs of Philadelphia’s most vulnerable populations—especially senior citizens, the immunocompromised, chronically ill neighbors and families with small children. Your gift will provide home-delivered meals, phones and basic equipment for senior citizens and those who need to remotely communicate with physicians, expanded diagnostic and testing capacity through mobile medical units and more.

If you’ve been to the store lately, you’re aware of an acute lack of sanitization supplies. These items are desperately needed to keep both patients and responders well. In order to address this shortage, Dr. David Lebo at the School of Pharmacy has formulated batches of hand sanitizer in his lab for use at Temple Health. You can help Dr. Lebo purchase additional components for his School of Pharmacy made hand sanitizer with a donation to this important initiative.

The Foot and Ankle Institute at Temple is one of the few places in the Philadelphia area equipped to handle damage to lower extremities caused by diabetes and emergency situations. Currently open two days a week for clinical purposes, the institute has continued to operate to decrease the burden on hospital emergency rooms, while faculty continue to provide necessary treatments for our wound care and limb salvage patients. To this end, the Foot and Ankle institute requires funds to purchase additional protective equipment, such as gloves, N95 masks and gowns. Your gift will ensure that the institute is able to serve its patients while doing its part to mitigate hospital overcrowding due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The College of Engineering is organizing a university-wide task force to support medical personnel on the front lines of the Temple Hospital COVID-19 response. This multidisciplinary group includes faculty, students and administrative staff focusing on fabrication, procurement and other support measures, some of which include:
  • 3-D printing components essential for Temple Health ventilator support.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face shields to be utilized across the health system.
  • Home-built ventilators designed around an MIT-designed DIY ventilator.
Do you have a surplus of any of the following? As more and more patients enter the hospital system because of the viral epidemic, Temple Health is looking to secure greater supplies of:
  • Masks
  • N95 masks
  • Gowns – including surgical and isolation
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Face shields
  • Tyvek coveralls
  • Hand sanitizer and wipes
