Farm to Families
The North Philadelphia community faces serious health challenges across a range of
issues, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The Farm to
Families program is a way to decrease chronic disease related to poor diet and
physical inactivity by increasing access to healthy foods.
Farm to Families brings low cost, fresh produce to families in North Philadelphia.
With a FreshRx "prescription" from a Temple doctor or food stamps, families can
buy fresh, organic produce throughout the year and learn how to sustain healthy
habits in a community hub near their doctor’s office. For just a bit more, they can get
dairy and meat too.
Through Farm to Families, families are able to:
- Purchase weekly boxes of assorted, seasonal fruits and vegetables
-
Observe cooking demonstrations and participate in taste tests
- Obtain information on the health benefits of the fruits and vegetables they
have purchased
- Learn how to budget and shopping tips
- Receive culturally and economically sensitive recipes to prepare
The Temple University Hospital and Lewis Katz School of Medicine partner with the
St. Christopher’s Foundation and the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative to source,
package and deliver fresh food to Farm to Family community food hubs. The
majority of the produce is organically grown, picked fresh and brought down to
Philadelphia the very next day – making it some of the healthiest food available.
