The Temple News Endowed Fund

The Temple News has been the paper of record for the Temple University community since it first printed as Temple University Weekly on September 19, 1921. The award-winning student media outlet, editorially independent of Temple, is now published monthly in print and daily online.

The Temple News distributes 2,000 printed copies, free of charge, to the university’s primary locations on campus. Its website, temple-news.com, generated more than 1.8 million page views and more than 405,000 new users during the 2022-23 academic year. Working at The Temple News is a critical professional development opportunity for our journalism students. Some of our recent Temple News graduates have moved on to earn jobs at places like The Philadelphia Inquirer, the New York Times and POLITICO.

However, many of our students who work at The Temple News are forced to balance the rigors of a nonstop news cycle and academic life on one hand with the demands of paying for their education and basic needs. Because some of our students have to take on two or even three additional jobs to finance their time at Temple, many of them cannot afford to work at The Temple News.

As it enters its 102nd year, The Temple News is continuing to partner with Klein College to work toward its goal of establishing an endowed fund that will support the paper’s compensation budget and allow us to increase student salaries. Your support will ensure that the college can continue to offer students who work at The Temple News the kind of compensation that allows them to focus on honing the skills and acquiring the experiences that will prepare them to become ethical and effective journalists.

Temple University’s required minimum threshold for an endowed fund is $50,000, and we are almost halfway to that goal. Once the fund reaches this level, it will become endowed in perpetuity.

Thanks to the generosity of Tom Eveslage, professor emeritus of journalism at Klein, and his wife Sonja Eveslage, we are able to offer a dollar-for-dollar match for every gift received from now until December 31, 2023–up to a total of $12,500. That means that, if you give to this campaign, you could double your contribution!

With your help, we could increase salaries at The Temple News and allow our student workers to focus on just one job as they continue to hone their craft and build a foundation for their career. That's what your gift can do.
