Sherell Everett Bernard, CHPSW ’03
“I was a member of my reunion class’s alumni committee. One of the things we talked a lot about was paying it forward for new students to come to Temple. That really hit home for me.”
For Sherell Everett Bernard, CHPSW ’03, ‘paying it forward’ is a concept laden with meaning.
The proud alumna has had a fulfilling life in the 10 years since she graduated. She followed up the bachelor’s in nursing that she received from Temple in 2003 with a master’s degree in nursing five years later. She now has a rewarding career as a nurse anesthetist at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.
Bernard credits Temple and its diverse, international campus with providing the ideal preparation for her job. “I think the main thing is being able to work and get along with people from all walks of life, all areas of the city, the country and outside the country,” she says. “Those are things I learned at Temple that have really helped me.”
But Bernard also knows that her education and the career it gave her wouldn’t have been possible without philanthropic support. “My whole college career was funded by scholarships and financial aid,” she says.
“I came from a single-parent household. My mother was not able to put up money for me to go to college. There was no savings plan or anything. So the scholarships I received were so important.”
Bernard has come a long way from her childhood home and from her days as a Temple undergraduate. But when it came time to celebrate her 10-year class reunion, she knew she had to do something for all of the current and future students who are trying to follow the same path as her. So Bernard made a gift of $100 to the Temple Fund.
“I just hope that people can see that even something small can go a long way,” she says. “Any gift can help people who don’t have as much of a chance to go to college or get the education and the opportunities we alumni were given.”
Gifts from alumni like Sherell sustain Temple’s mission of providing a high-quality education for talented and highly motivated students. When alumni donate to the university, no matter how much they give, they take the education and the opportunities they received and pay it forward for the next generation.
