UPDATE (APRIL 18): The Philadelphia Daily News highlights Angelica Owens, who is now 18-years old now, but is alive thanks in large part to the efforts of Temple nurses Maria Trillana and Sharon Hackney-Robinson, and Temple’s IICU. Read the story here.
UPDATE (APRIL 4): Our campaign went live on Friday, April 1, and already we have blown past our initial goal of $5,000. With your support, we have been able to sponsor 40 baby boxes at Temple University Hospital – think of what a difference this will make in the lives of those 40 babies and mothers. But we’re not done yet! Because of the overwhelming response, we have adjusted our goal – let’s get to an even 100 baby boxes – a goal of $15,000! Help us spread the word – there is so much good we can do with your help!
Will you help us save a baby’s life?
With your support, Temple University Hospital (TUH) can provide a baby box, along with prenatal and postpartum resources and programs, to all expectant mothers of the 3,000 babies born at Temple annually to reduce the occurrence of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID).
Why does Temple need baby boxes?
North Philadelphia has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the United States with many babies born into poverty and to young mothers who do not have adequate resources to care for a newborn. For every 1000 live births, 10 babies do not survive the first year of life in Philadelphia.
Why baby boxes?
A baby sleeping in a box? It may seem peculiar to you at first, but when you learn its impact, you’ll understand…it's genius. In the 1930s, Finland was a very poor country with a high infant mortality rate. In fact, 65 out of every 1,000 babies died. For the past 75 years, every expectant mother has been provided with a starter kit, drastically reducing the infant mortality rate to 3 per 1,000 today – what an impact!
