Temple WaterfOWLS: designed by students in 2015, manufactured by an alumnus working at Viking Yacht, continuously inspired by new Temple students with a slick design for building the next generation autonomous navigation control. WaterfOWLS version 2.0, consists of three female electrical and computer engineering students and one mechanical engineering student. This multi-disciplinary team is striving to compete in the 2016 International Roboboat Competition. The boat may potentially become a great humanitarian support resource, with the ability to respond to crisis in ocean, aid first responders or challenge the limits of artistic visual perspective. Autonomous vehicles are changing the way humans interact and communicate, and making their mark across the globe.

Background Information: Autonomous tasks the boat must complete include navigating an obstacle course, acoustic locating, interoperability challenge and self-docking. Successful participation requires cooperation of engineering students across disciplinary barriers. The project includes electrical, computer and mechanical systems, which are vital to the operation of an unmanned aquatic vehicle, and must most importantly work together. Developing an autonomous aquatic vehicle is a lofty pursuit, and one that will allow for the showcasing of the technical knowledge and design-thinking prowess that Temple University’s Engineering curriculum has honed in the students on our team.
