Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is an international organization whose goal is to build a better world through engineering projects that empower communities and equip leaders to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. Temple’s chapter of EWB has partnered with a small community in Saccha, Peru, which doesn’t have access to potable drinking water.
To improve the living conditions and public health of the community, we’re going to build a water distribution system that will allow them consistent and cheap access to clean drinking water. Instead of depending on potable water delivery (a detrimentally high long-term cost), or even worse, drinking unsanitary water, our project will allow the community to have an adequate amount of clean water to satisfy their living needs.
In January 2017, our chapter sent a group of four Temple students, a civil engineering professor, a professional engineer, and two translators to Peru to meet the community and assess the water sources. On our assessment trip, we found that most of the community was consistently drinking unsanitary water. Fortunately, we found a spring we can tap as a new, clean water source for the community.
We plan to travel to the community for our first implementation trip this August.

Our goal of $5,000 will cover building and travel costs to enable this trip:

$2,000 to hire a local mason to help build the spring box and storage tank.

$1,000 for concrete (cement, aggregate and shipping).

$1,200 for pipes.
