Temple Community Garden (TCG) is a student-run organization, founded in 2008, that manages two garden spaces on Temple’s campus at the intersection of Carlisle and Diamond Streets. Our mission as an organization is to provide an outlet for the Temple community and local residents to experience various aspects of urban gardening, horticulture, and sustainable living practices. We seek to provide an inviting green space for the co-creation of horticultural knowledge and community building.

Our garden hosts around 25 regular yearly members along with dozens of guests who come to experiment with various gardening and sustainability techniques. Many of them take what they learn at the garden and move on to work for one of Philly’s many green organizations. The community residents who stop by enthusiastically admire the work that Temple Community Garden is doing, and we offer all of the produce grown in the garden to anyone who wants it, at no cost.

Due to an unfortunate break in over the summer, TCG has lost some of its most valuable tools and garden supplies. Many of our power tools, gardening hand tools, construction tools, and part of our seed supply have been taken. Replacing these tools would mean restoring the full operation of the garden as well security in its future growth as a resource for sustainable education.

You can help us restore TCG to its full operational capacity so that students and local residents may continue to take advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities – and the many crops – it provides.

Our estimated total cost for restoration is $1,500:

  • $200 will replace all of our gardening tools, including
    • hand trowels ($10)
    • watering cans ($15)
    • pruners ($25)
  • $250 will replace all of our power tools, including
    • circular saw ($120)
    • jigsaw ($70)
    • hand drills ($60)
  • $150 will replace all of our construction tools, including
    • hammers ($10)
    • screwdrivers ($20)
    • staple guns ($45)
We can further enhance our garden through gifts of all sizes:

$200 can provide lumber to construct new garden beds, rebuild our compost bin, and plant trellises
$200 can provide more soil to fill these new garden beds
$300 can provide seating for volunteers and visitors
$100 can provide soil amendments and organic fertilizers
$100 can provide bushes and shrubs for beautification

We believe the support of additional and replacement resources will help TCG in its responsibilities to its mission as an educational outlet serving the Temple community and surrounding neighborhood.
